Approach

Project-Based Learning and Advanced STEM Training on Roosevelt Island

Learning Model

Mission Driven Journey

Every season of STEM/Camp will center on a technical theme and a single ambitious project. By the end of the camp we want to be able to (proudly) say "We made something awesome!"

Weekly Building Blocks

Each week, we'll introduce a new building block or problem-solving approach that brings us closer to our goal. Lessons will reinforce one another and help kids see the connection between each new idea.

Hands-On Activities

Students will play an active role every step of the way. We'll give them mini tasks like:

  • Sketching characters for digital games
  • Developing AI rules and instructions
  • Recording their voice for audio alerts
  • Working with circuit boards
  • And More!

Program Values

Value #1

Learn by Doing

No one learns anything sitting still. Students in STEM/Camp will be active for nearly the entire class. We want kids feeling like tinkerers and inventors.

Value #2

Fun Games, Real Challenges

Every season will come with a fun spin. We'll be creating games and silly robots. But make no mistake, the skills students will be learning and the tasks they will be completing will be challening. Fun is our way of hiding the real work students will be completing!

Value #3

Kids in Command

We want each camp to feel like kids are in the driving seat. Sometimes this means our program will shift directions based on their interest. If kids really want to incorporate a crazy feature or spend time recording zany sounds to incorporate into their robots, we'll help them do just that. We want them to feel ownership of their projects.

Value #4

Team Spirit

Every session will be designed to be collaborative. Students will work in small groups to solve problems, brainstorm ideas, and design solutions together. We want students to learn the practice of encouraging, supporting, and learning from one another.

Value #5

Rapid Exposure to Everything

As we get older, it can sometimes feel harder to process new ideas. But kids, can take in a huge amount of information and turn it into concrete knowledge. We want to embrace this childhood superpower and show them more, not less of what's possible.

Value #6

Metaskills Matter

Learning hard skills isn't enough. In order for kids to succeed, they need to learn how to communicate, work with others, and think strategically. These are critical skills we'll be emphasizing in every season's curriculum.
